The Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA)

Facts and Information about The Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority

TAZARA, also known as Uhuru Railway, is a Railway line between Kapiri Mposhi, Zambia, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The Line was constructed between 1970 and 1975 by thousands of Tanzanian, Zambian, and Chinese workers.

One of the hardest (and the most scenic) sections of the line is between Mlimba and Makambako. This 158km mountainous section took one year to complete, building 46 bridges and blasting tunnels.

Of the 22* Tunnels along the TAZARA (all of which are in Tanzania), 18 of them are located between Mlimba and Makambako.

* There is another tunnel at the Tunduma/Nakonde border crossing that is shared between the two countries.

Two Passenger Trains operate between Dar es Salaam and New Kapiri Mposhi – Kilimanjaro (Tanzania) and Mkuba Express (Zambia).
