Casinos to Visit on Your Nairobi Trip

Blink, and Nairobi Changes. This city under the sun is constantly re-inventing itself that on returning back from a short day trip, a resident would sometimes feel lost. Skyscrapers are coming up almost overnight. Roads are being diverted to ease the construction of even more ones. While most Historical buildings and monuments remain, in a few years the city will have altogether new types of attractions. However, for the sports traveler, the chaser of neon lights and slot machines, the city still holds a lucky card. Old casino buildings still stand and more luxurious ones are coming up.

If you are looking to spice up your Nairobi experience with a trip to a casino, there are quite a few really good land-based casinos in the city. But, before you pop into any of them, here are a few things you need to know.

Land-based casinos remain legal in Kenya despite the apparent fight between the authorities and gaming operators.
These fights always come up with the latter pushing for tighter casino laws which would place further restrictions on gambling in the country.

Casino Laws in Nairobi

For instance, Nairobi City County has been deliberating over restricting casino operations to just five-star hotels.  The County is pushing this agenda through the Nairobi City Council Betting, Lotteries Gaming Amendment Bill. Should this take effect, it would mean that stand-alone casinos can no longer operate in Kenya. The bill also restricts the gambling hours in the capital to between 8:00 pm and 6:00 am.

The reason behind these changes is to reduce the spiking gambling culture in Nairobi, especially amongst the younger generation. By limiting gambling activities to nighttime, the council believes young Kenyans will spend their day doing more productive tasks.

However, the County keeps is facing opposition from Kenya’s main gambling regulatory body, the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB), which is arguing that the county is acting outside its jurisdiction. The BCLB feels it should have the final say on gambling-related policies in Kenya. As a result of uncertainty around Kenya’s volatile casino laws, the best option would be to visit casinos in hotels.
